INTERNATIONAL 3-40 Israel Leader Resigns, Calls Early Elections Prime Minister Ehud Barak announced his resignation and said new elections would be held within 60 days. The move allows Mr. Barak to avail himself of a legal mechanism that would prevent former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyanu -- who currently holds a two-digit lead over Mr. Barak in most polls -- from running against him. 1 The Palestinian population is growing steadily angrier and the voices of moderation get ever quieter as the long period of violence produces a mounting toll of death.
