The Securities and Exchange Commission is examining the adequacy and timing of a $170.3 million charge that Armco Inc. recorded in the fourth quarter of 1991. The S.E.C. is conducting an informal inquiry to determine whether Armco, a steel maker based in Parsippany, N.J., should have taken the charge in an earlier period and whether the amount was appropriate.

Jostens Inc., a maker of educational software but perhaps better known for its school class rings, said it had agreed to acquire Wicat Systems Inc., another software company, for 3.8 million Jostens shares, or $110 million at current prices. Wicat, based in orem, Utah, provides educational software for grade schools and had sales of $49 million in the fiscal year ended March 31, 1991.

Sony Prices to Rise

The Sony Corporation said it would raise the prices for the electronics equipment it sells to its foreign subsidiaries. A report in today's Nihon Keizai newspaper said Sony would raise the prices of all of its audio-visual products by 3 percent before shipping costs. But a Sony spokesman declined to confirm that figure, saying the increases could be more or less than 3 percent.

The Lloyd's of London insurance syndicate said today that it had set up an underwriting group to provide a specialist insurance service for agricultural risks.
