LEAD: An affiliate of an Australian airline that is partly owned by the publisher Rupert Murdoch has purchased $15.6 million worth of debentures in America West Airlines, maintaining its 19.1 percent stake in the regional carrier based in Tempe, Ariz. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing,the Australian group said it had bought the debentures, which are convertible into 1.2 million America West shares.

LEAD: Cray Research Inc.'s chairman, John A. Rollwagen, said the company would expand its product line, introducing a lower-price version of its Y-MP supercomputer sometime in the first half of 1990. LEAD: A group of shareholders of the Chevron Corporation sued the company in Delaware chancery court to block part of a new ''poison pill'' plan aimed at thwarting a hostile takeover. The stockholder suit, court documents said, seeks to block an amendment to Chevron's shareholder rights plan that lowers to 10 percent, from 20 percent, the amount of stock held by a third party needed to begin anti-takeover provisions.

LEAD: A British investment group reported that it had acquired a 5.1 percent stake in the MDT Corporation. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the British group said it had purchased the MDT shares for investment purposes. The investment group is led by Britannia Arrow Holdings P.L.C., a publicly traded
