LEAD: Mail Boxes Etc. signed a letter of intent to sell to United Parcel Service Inc. 400,000 shares of its common stock for $10.1 million and 400,000 warrants, each exercisable into one share of Mail Boxes common stock, for $1.2 million. Ford Extends Buyer Incentives

LEAD: The Ford Motor Company said it had extended buyer incentives on most 1989 and 1990 model cars until Aug. 8. The incentives were scheduled to expire today. Incentives on Lincoln cars were extended to Sept. 26, the auto maker said. Ford's incentives range from $600 for the Aerostar mini-van and some pickups to $2,000 for the Lincoln Mark V

LEAD: The Western Union Corporation disclosed that the Securities and Exchange Commission had begun a formal investigation into whether the company issued false financial statements from April 1986 through March 1989. Calspan Awarded Air Force Contract
