Brent Faiyaz

Christopher Brent Wood (born September 19, 1995), known professionally as Brent Faiyaz, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, and record producer. Faiyaz rose to prominence following his guest performance alongside Shy Glizzy on GoldLink's 2016 single "Crew". The song peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, received octuple platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. The following year, Faiyaz released his debut studio album, Sonder Son (2017). He is noted for his "sly vocals" and "atmospheric slow jam productions," along with occasional rapping.

He first embarked on his musical career in 2013 with the release of his debut extended play (EP), Black Child followed by his second, A.M. Paradox (2016). In 2016, Faiyaz formed the R&B trio Sonder, for which he serves as lead vocalist. In February 2020, Faiyaz released his fourth EP, Fuck the World, which marked his first entry on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 20. His second studio album, Wasteland (2022) peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and spawned the Billboard Hot 100-charting singles, "Gravity" (with DJ Dahi featuring Tyler, the Creator), "Wasting Time" (featuring Drake and the Neptunes), and "Price of Fame", as well as the TikTok viral single "Dead Man Walking". His debut mixtape, Larger than Life (2023), debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 and was met with continued critical praise.

Along with a Grammy Award nomination, his other nominations include Favorite Male R&B Artist at the American Music Awards in 2022 and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist at the BET Awards in 2023 and 2024. Faiyaz founded the independent creative agency and record label ISO Supremacy in 2023, which has signed fellow DMV native, Tommy Richman.

Murdoch to Join Brazil TV-Service Venture

Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sept. 18 -- The News Corporation's chairman, Rupert Murdoch, said today that the company planned to spend up to $500 million with a Brazilian partner for a Latin American direct-to-home satellite television service. Netsat, a joint venture with Brazil's Globo media organization, should be in operation by March and have 4.5 million subscribers in Latin America within several years, Mr. Murdoch said. He added that the service should match his B Sky B subscribership of 3 million in Britain.

Magazine Files Appeal to Supreme Court

Business Week is preparing to go to press tonight for the second week in succession under a Federal court order restraining it from publishing information contained in sealed court records. In the rapidly developing First Amendment case, the magazine yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court. Also yesterday, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, in Cincinnati, dismissed an appeal by the McGraw-Hill Companies, parent of Business Week, saying the order was a temporary restraining order over which the court had no jurisdiction. The appeals court sent the matter back to the judge who issued the order, John Feikens of Federal District Court in Cincinnati.

Magazine Plans Appeal To High Court

In a First Amendment case that is drawing wide attention, executives of Business Week magazine said last night that they would go to a justice of the United States Supreme Court today to seek a stay of what they claim is an unconstitutional order that barred them from publishing an article last week. Lawyers for the magazine argued yesterday to a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati that the judges should overturn the unusual order issued by a Federal judge in Ohio, John Feikens.

VALUJET SAYS IT'S IN DISCUSSIONS TO BUY 50 JETS

Valujet Airlines Inc. is negotiating to buy 50 new jetliners for delivery in early 1997, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It was the first disclosure by the Atlanta-based company of how many planes it was considering buying. Valujet had said it was negotiating with four plane makers -- the Boeing Company, the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Airbus Industrie and Fokker Aircraft, which is owned by Daimler-Benz. Valujet's stock was down $2.875 yesterday, at $29.50, in Nasdaq trading.

POLAROID PREDICTS LOWER-THAN-EXPECTED EARNINGS

The Polaroid Corporation said yesterday that its profit from operations in the third quarter and 1995 would be "substantially lower" than expected because of slow sales growth in Russia and the rise in the dollar. Polaroid, the camera maker based in Cambridge, Mass., said in June that it expected profit from operations this year to remain unchanged from 1994. Shares of Polaroid fell $2.25, to $41.125, on the New York Stock Exchange. Polaroid was expected to earn 84 cents a share in the third quarter and $2.34 for the year, according to a survey of four analysts conducted by Zacks Investment Research.

BREUNER'S HOME FURNISHINGS TO ACQUIRE HUFFMAN KOOS

Huffman Koos Inc. agreed yesterday to be acquired by the Breuner's Home Furnishings Corporation for $36.9 million in cash, or $9.375 a share. Huffman Koos, based in River Edge, N.J., operates 13 furniture stores in New York and New Jersey. Breuner's Home Furnishings was recently formed as a holding company for the Huffman Koos acquisition by Kidd, Kamm & Company and Michael H. Solomon. Breuner's, based in San Diego, operates 12 furniture stores in California and Nevada under the Breuner's and Arnold's names. Shares of Huffman Koos rose 93.75 cents, to $8.9375, in Nasdaq trading.

GTE AWARDS MOTOROLA $800 MILLION CONTRACT

Motorola Inc. said yesterday that it had been awarded a contract, valued at $800 million by industry experts, to supply wireless communications equipment to the GTE Corporation's Mobilnet unit. With the equipment, GTE would provide personal communications services, the next generation of wireless services. Those services are similar to cellular, but will operate on different frequencies. GTE and Motorola officials declined to disclose the contract's value. The award was seen as a big victory for Motorola, which beat out the AT&T Corporation and other manufacturers for the contract. GTE's cellular equipment is currently made primarily by AT&T. Motorola's stock jumped $3 a share, to $81.75, a 52-week high.

MTEL INTRODUCES TWO-WAY PAGING SERVICE

The Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corporation said yesterday that its Skytel unit had introduced the nation's first two-way paging service that will allow users to reply to a beep or page. In addition, Hewlett-Packard, MCI Communications, Microsoft, Motorola and Sony Electronics have formed agreements with Skytel to develop and sell products and applications for the service, called Skytel 2-Way. With two-way paging, Mtel, based in Jackson, Miss., hopes to gain an edge on its competitors, including Paging Network Inc., the largest United States paging company. Skytel 2-Way service is initially available in 50 metropolitan markets.

3COM'S FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS NEARLY DOUBLE

The 3Com Corporation reported yesterday that its earnings for the fiscal first quarter almost doubled, beating Wall Street expectations, on strong sales of its computer network equipment. The company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., reported net income of $59.4 million, or 38 cents a share, compared with net income of $30.8 million, or 21 cents, in its 1994 fiscal first quarter. Revenue for the quarter ended Aug. 31 rose 64 percent to $430.4 million from $262.8 million. Wall Street analysts had expected 3Com, the third-biggest maker of computer network equipment after Cisco Systems Inc. and Bay Networks Inc., to earn 34 cents a share, according to a recent survey of 21 analysts by Zacks Investment Research. The earnings were announced after the stock market closed. Its shares rose $2.75, or 6.4 percent, to close at $45.75 in trading on the Nasdaq.
