LEAD: Faced with slumping auto sales, the Chrysler Corporation of Canada said it would lay off about 1,000 workers at its assembly plant in Bramalea, Ontario, for five weeks starting immediately. The plant makes the Eagle Premier and the Dodge Monaco. Earlier this month, Chrysler announced it would lay off 1,200 workers at its Jeep plant in Brampton, Ontario, and 2,100 workers at its van plant in Windsor, Ontario.

LEAD: Ecolab Inc., which markets cleaning and maintenance services, repurchased about 1.8 million of its shares for $55.3 million, or $30.75 a share, from the Carlyle Group and its affiliates It said Carlyle had agreed not to buy more Ecolab shares or otherwise try to influence Ecolab. Ecolab said that under its buyback program it had bought back about 2.4 million shares for about $72 million.
