The Times Agrees to Buy Newspaper Distributors

The New York Times Company announced yesterday that it had agreed to acquire a wholesale newspaper delivery operation that distributes almost half of the copies of The Times sold in the New York area, as well as other papers. The Times Company said it planned to acquire the operation, the Metropolitan News Company and Newark Newsdealers Supply Company, from Robert B. Cohen. The Times did not disclose the purchase price, but said the transaction should be completed this spring.

Maxwell's Racing Paper Shuts Down

The Racing Times, the newspaper started by Robert Maxwell less than 10 months ago to challenge The Daily Racing Form, was closed yesterday after no buyer emerged to rescue it from the financial upheaval that has torn apart the Maxwell media empire. The Racing Form, long rumored to be a possible buyer of The Racing Times, agreed to purchase only some assets of its rival, particularly computer equipment and software.

The evidence is just beginning to come in. Spinoffs Set By Dresser

Dresser Industries said it would spin off its industrial and mining equipment divisions, including a 50 percent stake in the Komatsu-Dresser construction equipment joint venture with Japan. Dresser said it was transferring ownership of the divisions to a subsidiary company, which would be spun off to shareholders in a tax-free transaction.

Kansas Utilities' Merger Is Cleared

The Kansas Power and Light Company said it had received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission for its $1 billion merger with the Kansas Gas and Electric Company of Wichita. The S.E.C. clearance was the final regulatory approval required for the merger, which was first announced in October 1990. Kansas Power, based in Topeka, said it would announce a merger date soon.
