Covering the Next War

On March 17, 1991, at the conclusion of the gulf war, the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, Pete Williams, proclaimed that reporters in the gulf had produced "the best war coverage" in U.S. history. Mr. Williams could not have been more wrong. Desert Storm was certainly the worst- covered major U.S. conflict in this century. And now, nearly 17 months after the end of the war, many critics -- including John R. MacArthur, the publisher of Harper's, in his new book "Second Front" -- are asking why there was so little reporting of actual combat in the gulf and what can be done to assure that there will be more -- and better -- coverage in the future. The answer to the first question is alarmingly simple: The Pentagon allowed only "pools" to cover the war -- small bunches of reporters, representing the entire press corps and rigidly controlled by various military "minders." On top of that, as a condition of participating in the pools, journalists had to submit their reports to military censors for "security review."

Judge Weighs Citing Reporter for Contempt

A Vermont newspaper reporter remained free today after a judge said he would consider whether to hold her in contempt of court. After an hourlong hearing here, the judge, George F. Ellison of Vermont District Court, promised a written decision "in the near future."

Papers Woo Long-Term Subscribers

For newspapers, keeping subscribers has proved even more frustrating than getting them, and a budding trend within the industry is to reward customers for buying long-term subscriptions by giving them cards entitling them to discounts at a wide array of local businesses. In Tucson, The Arizona Daily Star and The Tucson Citizen call their version the Extra Card, which is a credit-card-sized piece of plastic that can be presented for a discount at restaurants and other participating businesses.

MILLIONS ON STRIKE TO BACK MANDELA ON MAJORITY RULE

In what organizers hailed as a resounding and comparatively peaceful black "referendum" in support of ending white rule, millions of South Africans began a two-day general strike today that stilled large portions of industry and turned urban centers into ghost towns. The day was marred by sporadic violence that killed at least 12 people, a fairly typical death toll in South Africa these days.

Cigna's Profit Declines 26.4%

The Cigna Corporation said today that second-quarter profits fell 26.4 percent because of high catastrophe losses and a weak worldwide market for property and casualty insurance. The insurer reported that its net income fell to $125 million, or $1.74 a share, from $170 million, or $2.38 a share, in the period a year earlier.

SPRINT MARKETS PICTURETEL VIDEO CONFERENCE SYSTEMS

The Sprint Corporation said yesterday that it would co-market the Picturetel Corporation's video conferencing systems. With the Picturetel agreement, Sprint is aligned with all major United States video-system makers, the telecommunications company said. Sprint will act as the only point of contact for Sprint customers on Picturetel system purchases. Picturetel, of Danvers, Mass., makes telecommunications systems using advanced compression technology.

HIGHER LOSS IN QUARTER FOR AMERICA WEST AIRLINES

America West Airlines, considered to be among the weakest United States air carriers, reported a $33.4 million second-quarter loss, compared with a loss of $30.9 million for the second quarter of 1991. Operating revenues declined 12 percent, to $333.5 million from $378.5 million a year ago. The bankrupt airline cited the fare war during May and June as the reason for lost revenue.

MACY LOSES $64.7 MILLION IN FIVE WEEKS

R. H. Macy & Company yesterday posted a loss of $64.7 million on sales of $535.1 million for the five weeks ended July 4. The retailer posted an operating loss of $32.9 million for the five-week period before interest expenses of $29.3 million and restructuring charges of $2.5 million.

CHILD WORLD WILL CLOSE AS TALKS WITH LIONEL FAIL

Child World Inc.'s merger talks with the Lionel Corporation have collapsed and the company plans to cease operations, a spokeswoman said yesterday. The toy retailer will continue its going-out-of-business sale and expects to close its 71 remaining stores in three to five weeks, depending on how much of the stores' merchandise is sold by that time, the spokeswoman said. Officials at both companies could not be reached for comment.

SMALLER INTERCO EMERGES FROM CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY

Interco Inc., the furniture and shoe maker, and its subsidiaries emerged from Chapter 11 reorganization, more than 18 months after seeking protection from creditors. Interco, burdened with $2.34 billion of debt it assumed to fend off a 1988 takeover attempt, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 1991.
