JUDGE CLEARS WAY FOR THE PURCHASE OF NEW YORK POST

A Federal bankruptcy judge removed the biggest hurdle keeping Steven Hoffenberg from becoming the owner of The New York Post in a court proceeding yesterday that was part high finance and part street theater. In a hearing that included a surprise appearance by a rival bidder who was quickly rejected, Judge Burton R. Lif land approved the sale of The Post to Mr. Hoffenberg, indicating there were no other options.

LLOYD'S OF LONDON TO CUT 600 JOBS THIS YEAR

The Lloyd's of London insurance market said yesterday that it would cut its staff to 1,900 from 2,200 by the end of February and to 1,600 by the end of the year. In a letter to employees, Lloyd's chief executive, Peter Middleton, said the further cuts were inevitable. Lloyd's is expected to report a loss of $:1.6 billion, or $2.3 billion, for 1991. Lloyd's reports three years in arrears.

DONALDSON IN TALKS TO ACQUIRE 9% STAKE IN DWG

The DWG Corporation, which owns Arby's restaurants and Royal Crown Cola, is discussing a cash sale of 9 percent of its voting stock for $25 million to Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, the New York investment banking firm. Donaldson would also designate a representative to serve on the DWG board, according to a preliminary DWG proxy.

Westinghouse Rearranges Structure of Its Top Ranks

Apparently eager to steer a new course in the wake of the departure of Paul Lego as chief executive, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation has rearranged its top-level management and decision-making structure. Westinghouse said today that it had formed five operating groups to simplify the corporate structure and had named an eight-member management committee that will set corporate policy.

DEAN WITTER RAISES PRICE OF INITIAL STOCK OFFERING

Dean Witter, Discover & Company plans to raise almost $800 million on Monday in an initial stock offering of about 20 percent of the securities brokerage and credit card company. Dean Witter, Discover, which is a unit of Sears, Roebuck & Company, plans to sell 29.5 million common shares at $25 to $27 each. The company consists of Dean Witter Reynolds, a securities firm with about 7,000 brokers, and the Discover credit card.

W. R. GRACE FORMALLY DROPS BID FOR HOME INTENSIVE CARE

Shares in Home Intensive Care Inc. fell 17 percent yesterday after the home-health-care company said W. R. Grace & Company had formally withdrawn its offer to buy the company for $6 a share, or $93.8 million. Home Intensive Care rejected the chemical and health-care company's offer last month, saying the price was too low.

United Biscuits Holdings said today that it might sell its Terry's of York chocolate subsidiary, igniting speculation about a shake-up in Europe's chocolate industry. Analysts said Terry's, the fourth-largest chocolate maker in Britain, was probably worth 20 times after-tax profit, or $:170 million to $:200 million ($247 million to $290 million).

Teledyne Inc., a leading maker of military electronics, has agreed to pay a $2.15 million fine to settle charges that it failed to perform tests on electronics components it sold to the military. The settlement partly resolves a suit filed under the False Claims Act in June 1990 by Marianne D. Gendron, a former quality planning engineer at Teledyne Controls, the division responsible for the testing.
