Views on Health Care Aren't Universal

Americans are sure that there is a problem with health care - three quarters of all respondents in last week's New York Times/CBS News Poll thought that the current system was heading toward a crisis - but they don't always agree on what exactly is wrong and the ways it should be fixed. Some of the disparities reflected the current system's problems. Poorer people were more likely to be dissatisfied about the current coverage and cost of health care. Black respondents were far less likely than white ones to say that their families had enough coverage

This Autumn in New York, Fear of Asbestos Is in the Air

SOMEDAY, maybe every pollutant will be famous for 15 minutes. Right now it's asbestos's turn. In a city filled with threats, environmental and otherwise, asbestos has nearly become an obsession. New York City had a crash program to find and remove dangerous asbestos in schools after a 1986 Federal law. Now it has another. Politicians rage, parents protest, investigators investigate and lots of people worry, including kids who are attending schools marked by the modern version of a witch's hex mark, duct tape.

Hunted Somali General Lashes Out

United Nations officials in Mogadishu say that Gen. Mohammed Farah Aidid, blamed for the downing of a helicopter this morning in which three Americans were killed, is feeling increasingly isolated and so is stepping up his campaign of violence. On Tuesday, United States troops captured Osman Hassan Ali, General Aidid's chief financier and weapons procurer.

Publishers Laboring for Love, Not Money

HOW do newspapers that rarely break even and frequently cost their owners money survive? Only when the owners are motivated by moral commitment rather than financial gain, say the publishers of two minority newspapers: M. Paul Redd, who owns The Westchester County Press, a weekly and the only black-owned paper in Westchester, and Gustavo Roca, owner of La Calle, a monthly Hispanic newspaper, which Mr. Roca began publishing in 1989. Mr. Redd, who bought The Westchester County Press in 1986, said he is 66 years old, 10 days older than The County Press, which began publishing on Aug. 11, 1927.

Chase Venture In Kazakhstan

The Chase Manhattan Corporation said this week that it had established a 50-50 joint investment banking venture with the republic of Kazakhstan. Chase's vice chairman, Robert R. Douglass, said the venture, to be called the Kazakhstan International Bank, would engage in financial and advisory activities, including foreign exchange, commodity hedging, project finance, trade finance and syndicated loans.

AUTOIMMUNE STOCK SURGES ON ARTHRITIS STUDY

The stock of Autoimmune Inc. soared yesterday after a study found that the company's rheumatoid arthritis treatment helped alleviate symptoms of the disorder. The study, whose results are carried in the journal Science, found treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with Type 2 collagen derived from chicken cartilage reduced the severity of the disease in 28 patients. The patients showed a significant reduction in symptoms, which include swollen and tender joints. Four patients went into complete remission, the study found. Autoimmune shares were up $2.375, to $9, in Nasdaq trading.

AMSOUTH PLANS JOB CUTS AND EARNINGS CHARGE

The AmSouth Corporation said yesterday that it planned to cut up to 750 jobs, or 12.5 percent of its work force, and take an $11 million charge to earnings as part of a reorganization. The company expected to save more than $20 million annually from the multiyear program, which began in July with a management realignment. It will take an $11 million charge in the third quarter from setting aside cash for early retirement benefits. AmSouth said the charge would not affect net income, because it would be made up by a reduction in credit quality costs, including a substantial loan recovery. AmSouth said the actions would help it absorb eight Florida banking companies, which would expand AmSouth's Florida network to 125 offices from 24.

NEBRASKA CAPITAL PURCHASE TO EXPAND BANC ONE

The Banc One Corporation, based in Columbus, Ohio, signed a letter of intent yesterday to buy the Nebraska Capital Corporation of Lincoln, Neb., its second bank purchase in the state, for an undisclosed price. Nebraska Capital has $95 million in assets and is the parent of the four-branch Havelock Bank. The purchase depends upon Banc One's completion of the acquisition of Firstier Financial Inc. of Omaha, which has 43 offices and $3 billion in assets. Banc One agreed to buy Firstier in April in a one-for-one stock swap valued at about $700 million, to enter Nebraska. Banc One said it expected the Nebraska Capital transaction to close in the second quarter of 1994. Banc One is the nation's eighth-largest banking company.

MCI SAYS COURT RULES IN ITS FAVOR ON RATE FILING

The MCI Communications Corporation said yesterday that a United States District Court judge freed the company of an injunction requiring it to file specific rate tariffs for major contract customers. The injunction stemmed from a complaint by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company requesting that MCI disclose all the rates it charges to its customers. The complaint was dismissed. Yesterday's ruling reverses an earlier ruling ordering MCI to disclose all rate schedules to insure that it is not charging customers differently from published rates filed with the Federal Communications Commission. The commission required MCI to file rates in the spring, after extended litigation in Federal court. A.T.& T., the dominant carrier in the $77 billion United States long-distance market, has long been required to file all tariff schedules with the F.C.C.

Buyers Visit Chevron Sites

The Chevron Corporation has several potential buyers for its refineries in Philadelphia and Port Arthur, Tex., a company executive said today. On Thursday, several buyers visited the Philadelphia refinery, where 130,000 barrels a day of crude oil are processed. Chevron expects to begin receiving bids by the end of this year, according to James Sullivan, a vice chairman in charge of refining and marketing operations.
