U.S. Journalists Killed in Bosnia

Two American journalists were killed and another was slightly wounded today when they drove over a mine about eight miles north of Mostar, after having strayed off the main road from Mostar to Sarajevo, United Nations officials said. The officials identified the dead as Francis Tomasic of Spin magazine, which is devoted to popular music and culture, and Brian Brenton of Magnolia News, a weekly based in Seattle. The wounded journalist was identified as the novelist William T. Vollmann, who was on assignment for Spin.

At her press conference last month Hillary Rodham Clinton turned aside a question about the politics of personal destruction. "I can't really help it," she said, "if some people get up every day wanting to destroy." The way Mrs. Clinton put it reflected the pain that she and the President have surely felt at the level of personal attack leveled at them in recent months. Whitewater is only part of it. Below the mainstream press there is a flow of poison directed at the President and his wife: in the comments of talk-show bigots, in extreme-right magazines and newsletters.

Gas Deal by Tenneco

The Tenneco Gas Company, a unit of Tenneco Inc., said today that it had bought a 50 percent stake in the partnership that owns and operates the Dauphin Island Gathering System, an offshore natural gas pipeline in Mobile Bay, Ala. The price of the transaction was not disclosed.

CAESARS STOCK FALLS 10% ON DECLINE IN EARNINGS

The stock of Caesars World Inc. declined 10 percent yesterday after the company said it expected to report earnings of 42 to 50 cents a share in the quarter that ended on April 30, compared with 69 cents in the quarter a year earlier. The company, which owns casino hotels in Nevada and Atlantic City, attributed the decline to increased marketing expenses and higher provisions to cover uncollectible gambling debts and to provide free services for high-rolling patrons. The company's shares fell $4.875, to $43.75, on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than one million of its shares were traded.

Bank to Buy German Sites

Deutsche Bank A.G. will buy three lavish development sites started by the Schneider group, which is now defunct. The bank provided most of the financing for the projects. In a weekend interview with Hessischer Rundfunk radio, Deutsche Bank's managing board member, Georg Krupp, said the bank was in the final stages of acquiring two hotels in Wiesbaden and Munich and a mall in Frankfurt.

Factory Data Were Strong During April

Manufacturing expanded for the eighth straight month in April, with the strongest showing in manufacturing employment in five years, the National Association of Purchasing Management said today. In another report, the Commerce Department said today that construction spending rose eight-tenths of a percent in March, reversing two months of weather-related declines.

GE Capital's Kemper Threat

The GE Capital Corporation said today that it would drop its $2.1 billion bid for the Kemper Corporation unless investors voted for its slate of candidates for Kemper's board at the company's annual meeting next week. "If we win, our nominees are committed to an immediate sale of Kemper for at least $55 a share," Gary Wendt, the president and chief executive of GE Capital, wrote in a letter to Kemper shareholders. "If not, we will withdraw our proposal."

Dollar Falls Again vs. Mark As Fed Remains on Sidelines

The dollar fell against the German mark yesterday for the seventh straight trading session as confidence in the American currency continued to wane and the Federal Reserve made no apparent effort to stem its slide. On Friday, The Fed bought dollars for marks and Japanese yen after the dollar fell to a six-month low against the mark and an eight-month low against the yen. Now traders are waiting to see if the Fed is willing to defend the dollar again.
