Beyond the Shroud

LAST AUTUMN, IN A FLIGHT OF ANGRY rhetoric, I accused the three main television networks of drawing a great shroud across the mind of America and leading the public back toward isolationism. I observed that the dwindling TV staffs abroad still report an occasional massacre or famine but that most evenings the newscasts and magazine shows treat the five billion folks beyond our borders as inconsequential and irrelevant. That conclusion now requires well, not correction but, as the old, incorrigible New Yorker magazine would say, amplification. Many readers reported similar resentment of television's withdrawal from the world and also of the meager diet of international news in most newspapers. An energetic demurral, however, came from NBC's Tom Brokaw, a frequent foreign flier and student of both the world and its treatment on the tube. He cited some recent television reports that defied the trend I was bemoaning. More insistently, he argued that television and journalism are not so much the causes of a new American isolationism as its victims.

THE arrival of Communist rule is still three summers away, but Hong Kong's rambunctious, free-swinging press is already beginning to pull its punches lest it offend its future rulers, many journalists here say. In the absence of official censorship, there is a growing perception of self-censorship among many editors and journalists. "Subtle change would be the best term to describe it," said Daisy Li Yuet-wah, an editor at the independent paper Ming Pao and a leader of the Hong Kong Journalists' Association. "You see a gradual toning down of certain kinds of stories, playing down stories. Day after day this happens. Self-censorship is the greatest threat to Hong Kong journalism right now."

REMEDY SURGES ON FIRST DAY OF TRADING

The Remedy Corporation became the latest technology company to come roaring out of the gate. The company, a software maker based in Mountain View, Calif., closed at $34, down $9 on the day but up $11 a share from its offering price of $23, as almost 3.7 million shares were traded. The stock was as high as $43.50 earlier in the day.

CHRYSLER INCREASES PRICE OF JEEP WRANGLER

The Chrysler Corporation is raising base prices of its 1995-model Jeep Wrangler sport-utility vehicles an average of eight-tenths of 1 percent, or $108, effective immediately. The Wrangler S model's new base price is $11,995, up six-tenths of 1percent, or $77. The base price of the Wrangler SE model is now $15,688, a rise of 1 percent, or $151. The Wrangler's destination charge remains $495, and all extra-cost option prices are unchanged, a spokeswoman said.

DONNELLEY IS NEAR PACT WITH CORPORATE SOFTWARE

R. R. Donnelley & Sons is close to a final agreement to merge its Global Software Services unit with Corporate Software Inc. The merger, expected to be completed next month, will create a closely held company with annual revenue of more than $1.3 billion, Donnelley said. Rory Cowan, executive vice president of Donnelley, will be chairman of the new company. Mort Rosenthal, Corporate Software's chairman and chief executive, will be the new company's chief executive. Donnelley will have majority ownership in the new company. Donnelley, based in Chicago, is a commercial printer and supplier of commercial printing services.

FORD'S FINANCE UNIT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION

The Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission are investigating the Ford Motor Company and its primary finance unit to see if they violated Federal laws that prohibit lending discrimination. The investigation involves whether Ford and its Ford Motor Credit Company complied with the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1968 in financing retail vehicle sales, according to a filing by Ford with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "I can tell you we are cooperating with the investigation, and we believe our lending practices fully support Ford's policy of equal opportunity lending," said Nick Sharkey, a Ford Motor Credit spokesman.

WOODWARD & LOTHROP TO SELL 4 DEPARTMENT STORES

As part of its effort to reorganize while operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy law protection, Woodward & Lothrop Inc. said yesterday that it had decided to sell 4 of its 29 department stores. The company, which is based in Washington, said it would find jobs at other Woodward & Lothrop stores for the 517 regular employees affected by the move. The stores to be sold are in Falls Church, Va.; Jenkintown, Pa., and Hyattsville and Landover, both in Maryland.

MEDITRUST RAISES $264 MILLION IN SECONDARY OFFERING

Meditrust said yesterday that it had sold 8.75 million common shares at $30.125 in a secondary offering, raising about $264 million before underwriting fees. The company -- which is based in Needham Heights, Mass., and is the nation's largest real estate investment trust specializing in health care properties -- will use the proceeds to pay off short-term debt, according to a spokeswoman.

HUNTSMAN FAMILY ACQUIRES REST OF CHEMICAL COMPANY

The family of the businessman Jon Huntsman said yesterday that it had acquired the 17 percent of its Huntsman Chemical Corporation unit that it did not already own from the Great Lakes Chemical Corporation to consolidate its various businesses. The family said it had transferred 58,700 shares of nonvoting series A preferred stock to Great Lakes in exchange for 2.16 million shares of Huntsman Chemical common stock. The preferred stock, with an annual dividend rate of 14 percent, has a total face value of $58.7 million. Great Lakes Chemical will continue to supply polymer additives and other materials to Huntsman Chemical under long-term agreements, Huntsman said.
