CHAMPION ENTERPRISES IN DEAL TO ADD HOMES OF MERIT

Champion Enterprises Inc., the top United States maker of manufactured homes, agreed yesterday to buy the closely held Homes of Merit Inc. for an undisclosed price to expand in Florida. Homes of Merit is the largest builder of manufactured homes in Florida, with 1997 sales of about $120 million. The acquisition will add six plants to Champion's existing 60 and expand its high-end production. Champion, based in Auburn Hills, Mich., has bought or agreed to buy 15 companies, including Homes of Merit, since December and is now the third-largest United States retailer of prefabricated dwellings. Champion's shares rose rose 75 cents yesterday, to $21.3125, on the New York Stock Exchange.

LIVENT RESUMES TRADING AFTER NEARLY 4 MONTHS

Almost four months after the stock was halted because of accounting irregularities, Livent Inc.'s shares opened far lower when they resumed trading yesterday. In the United States shares traded briefly before being halted again. Shares on the Toronto exchange closed at 50 cents (Canadian), or 32 cents (United States), down from $10.15 (Canadian) when trading was halted on Aug. 7. Two days ago, the Toronto-based producer of ''Ragtime'' and other Broadway shows filed for bankruptcy and restated more than two years of financial results, wiping out $85.1 million of earnings.

BEA SYSTEMS SHARES FALL ON SALES GROWTH WARNINGS

The stock of BEA Systems Inc., the No. 2 maker of software for airline reservation systems, lost about half their value yesterday after the company issued a surprise warning that sales growth would slow because customers had delayed orders. Shares plunged $13.0625, to $13.9375, in trading of 20.2 million shares, making it the most active United States stock. The company, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., blamed recessions in Asia and economic slowdowns elsewhere for the delay in corporate purchases. BEA was founded in 1995.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES BUYS 10 PLANES FROM BOEING

Continental Airlines Inc., the fifth-largest United States carrier, bought 10 of the Boeing Company's 767-200 planes for flights to Europe and South America in an order valued at as much as $930 million. The airline said the long-haul planes, seating 176 passengers, would replace Boeing 747's and DC-10's that the carrier plans to retire. The new planes will begin arriving in 2000. The contract is a boost for Boeing's wide-body jet program, which is struggling because a recession in Asia cut sales in what was one of the fastest-growing plane markets. The airline also has the option to buy another 28 wide-body planes, typically used for longer flights, between 2000 and 2005.

BLUE RANGE REJECTS BID BY BIG BEAR EXPLORATION

The Blue Range Resource Corporation, a petroleum company in Calgary, Alberta, yesterday rejected Big Bear Exploration Ltd.'s takeover offer, saying it expects to receive a higher bid. Blue Range said the company's assets are worth more than Big Bear's offer of about $5.50 (Canadian) a share, or a total of $194 million (Canadian). Big Bear also said it would assume debt of $105 million. The actual offer by Big Bear, which is also based in Calgary, is 11 of its shares for each Blue Range share. Blue Range has now made its financial and operating records available to would-be bidders. Gordon Ironside, the company's chief executive, has said he is hoping for a bid of at least $8 a share.
