Men from across Arab world, driven by combination of religious zeal and Arab nationalism, are volunteering for jihad against United States presence in Iraq; hundreds are waiting in Damascus, hoping for seat on one of free buses provided by Iraqi interests or other transportation to war zone; Baghdad issues daily exhortations for faithful to join the fray, and boasts of arrival of thousands of volunteers; Vice Pres Taha Yassin Ramadan, in latest news conference, claims count stands at 6,000, with half of them willing to be suicide bombers; Syria, like most Arab governments, officially discourages anyone from going, but it has long borders with Iraq and anyone holding passport from an Arab country can enter or leave with few questions asked; rulings from Muslim religious institutions on issue of jihad have been mixed; many volunteers waiting in Damascus speak only of importance of jihad to defend any Islamic land, whether their religious elders support it or not; others say they are going because they are outraged that United States claims it is bringing deomcracy to Iraq while killing civilians daily; photo (M)
