The newspaper of the future may -- or may not -- be here. Last May, The San Jose Mercury News started a series of electronic services available by computer, telephone and fax. It calls them electronic extensions of the newspaper -- on-line copies of the contents of the newspaper, news updates, news conference transcripts, electronic "chats," movie theater schedules and more.

E. Garrett Bewkes 3d, a senior managing director of the Bear Stearns Companies, has joined Investcorp as the leader of its North American acquisitions group. The 43-year-old investment banker was vice chairman of Bear Stearns's investment banking committee. He joined Bear Stearns, the country's sixth-largest securities firm, in 1986 from the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, now owned by the Chemical Banking Corporation.
